March Fair in Aveiro: Where It Has Been Held Throughout History

The March Fair is one of Aveiro's most traditional popular celebrations, dating back to the 15th century. The fair was created by a royal charter granted by King Duarte, with the aim of boosting local trade and attracting merchants and visitors to the city. Although today it is a major entertainment event, the history of the fair is deeply linked to the urban evolution of the city, including the places where it has been held over the years.

Early Historical Locations

1. Praça do Peixe (19th – early 20th century)

In its early days, the March Fair was held near Praça do Peixe, at the heart of the city’s commercial district. This area, close to the canals and riverside, was a natural spot for merchants, farmers, and visitors to trade products and enjoy the festivities.

2. Praça do Município / Largo Dr. Silva Rocha (early – mid 20th century)

As the fair grew, it moved to larger spaces in the historic center, such as Praça do Município (now called Largo Dr. Silva Rocha). Here, there was more room for market stalls, attractions, and cultural gatherings, all in a central and accessible location.

3. Old school area grounds (1950s–1960s)

With the increasing size and visitor numbers, larger plots of land near today’s school zones and public facilities were used. These spaces allowed for more rides, exhibitions, and commercial areas during the event.

Current Location: Aveiro Fair and Exhibition Park

For several decades, the March Fair has been held at the Parque de Feiras e Exposições de Aveiro, a space designed to host large-scale events in an organized and comfortable way.

During the fair, visitors can enjoy:

  • Rides and carousels for all ages

  • Live concerts and performances

  • Restaurants, food stalls, and gastronomic areas

  • Exhibition and commerce zones

This venue accommodates the diverse audience that attends the fair each year, from families with children to visitors from across the country and abroad.
